# AEO/GEO

> Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) — the practice of optimising brand visibility in AI-generated search answers.

**AEO/GEO** — answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) — is the practice of optimising how brands appear inside AI-generated answers across platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Google's AI surfaces (AI Overviews and AI Mode). It is a distinct discipline from traditional [SEO](/concepts/foundations/geo-vs-seo), focused on being mentioned and cited in synthesised AI responses rather than ranking in search engine results pages.

## Why it matters

When a customer asks an AI platform "best HR software for Indian startups," the AI synthesises an answer that names 3–5 brands. If your brand is not among them, you are invisible to that customer. AEO/GEO is the discipline that measures and improves this visibility. As AI search adoption grows, brands without an AEO/GEO strategy face a widening gap between their traditional search presence and their AI search presence.

## How Cited uses it

Cited is built entirely around AEO/GEO measurement. The platform tracks [mention rate](/concepts/metrics/mention-rate), [citation rate](/concepts/metrics/citation-rate), [share of voice](/concepts/metrics/share-of-voice), [sentiment](/concepts/metrics/sentiment), and [average position](/concepts/metrics/average-position) across every tracked AI platform. The [Cited Index](https://www.getcited.in/cited-index) provides empirical benchmarks for AEO/GEO performance across 200+ Indian brands.
